New York Mets defeat Oakland Athletics 3-2 in 13 innings – MLB Update
The New York Mets came back to defeat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 in the second game of the series to level at 1-1 on Wednesday, June 22 at Citi Field in New York.
The match went neck-to-neck before the Mets sealed it in the 13th innings.
The Mets were quick to open the scoring with Scott Hairston adding one in the second innings. The Athletics broke the barrier only in the fifth innings when Kurt Suzuki smashed his fifth home-run of the season, taking his career tally just in sight of 50.
The score stood at one run each till the next two innings before Jose Reyes added another for the Mets. Reyes continued his hitting form from the last game and the Mets took a 2-1 lead after the eight innings. The lead was short-lived as the A’s quickly
caught up and Coco Crisp added one for the Athletics taking the score line at two runs each at the close of the ninth innings.
The match went beyond the regular nine innings with the scores standing level at the end of the regular number of innings. The 10th, 11th and the 12th innings ended in a deadlock with neither side able to score. Lucas Duda
became the hero for the Mets as he scored in the 13th inning to take the score to 3-2 and seal the night for the Mets.
The pitchers from both sides had a tough side. R.A. Dickey, the Mets’ starting pitcher, threw for eight innings leaking only one run. He was well matched by Gio Gonzalez who gave up one run in the seven innings he pitched.
It was Bobby Parnell, however, who won the game in the end, recording his second win and taking his win-loss record to 2-1 for the season. The relief pitcher threw at an ERA of 3.18, pitching in one inning and managing eight strike-outs of 11. He did not
concede any hit or any run.
Brad Ziegler from Oakland’s side could not meet Parnell’s feat and went for three hits and one run in just over an inning. He went on to lose the game, his win-loss record now standing at 2-1.
The Mets’ manager, commenting on the game lasting for 13 innings said, "If you're going to play that long and that gruelling, you might as well win."
The game ended the six-game winning streak for the Oakland Athletics, taking their season record to 34-41.
The Mets are now 36-38 for the season. With the series level at one game each, it will be ‘all-to-play’ for on Thursday night at Citi Field.
It will be interesting to see how A’s come back in the game and respond to their loss after six games. The Mets, on the other hand, desperately need to convert this win into some sort of a streak.
