New York Mets defeat Oakland Athletics 4-1 – MLB Update
Chris Capuano put in a brilliant pitching performance as the New York Mets edged past the Oakland Athletics 4-1 at Citi Field on Thursday, 23 June.
But before he could see his team win, Capuano had to leave the ground due to an injury. "I felt it warming up in the bullpen," Capuano said. "Just a little crampy. Not real sharp. Like a little dull ache.I think it was smart to come out. Let's nip it in
the bud."
Losing the first game by 7-3 to Oakland and after coming back in the second game with a 3-2 win, the Mets settled and put everything in order to comfortably win the series.
After pitching two scoreless innings, the intimidating Capuano was dispatched to face the Athletics’ rival Graham Godfrey. Capuano, being unbeatable with his pitches, aggressively hit the ball, earning an RBI single to give his team a much-sought 1-0 lead.
The 4-hit second inning did not come to an end there. Jose Reyes drove in a single to double the lead for the New York followed by Capuano’s scoreless inning, strengthening the team’s grip on the game.
With a 2.88 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, Capuano has pitched 25 innings in June having given up 25 hits and 9 runs. His dominance could be conspicuously seen on the field with none of the Athletics’ hitters able to comfortably play him in the face of rapidly pitched
fastballs.
Daniel Murphy, on the other hand, charged Godfrey in the fifth to enable Reyes score, taking the lead 3-0 for the Mets. Godfrey who was not having a good game then allowed another single to Jose Reyes in the sixth, adding to the team’s woes.
Chris Capuano had to leave the ground after the sixth inning that he pitched, upholding the Mets’ 4-0 lead. Pedro Beato pitched a shut-out seventh in the aftermath of Capuano’s departure, providing reassurance to his team that everything was still in their
grip.
Pedro’s pitching was subject to a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning by Coco Crisp, bringing the lead down to 4-1. But before the Athletics could settle, Francisco Rodriguez came in the 9th inning to pitch.
Rodriguez was successful in sending every hitter home without letting them hit a single pitch, concluding the game with 4-1 win and the 2-1 series victory for the now improved New York Mets.
The Mets managed to put in a tremendous effort and dominate the game from the beginning. Their pitching line-up restricted the Athletics’ offence from putting in big hits. The Athletics fought hard but were unable to get their offence to fire against the
Mets.
