New York Mets defeat Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 as David Wright shines - MLB Update
All-star R.A. Dickey gives up five runs in a rare show of being roughed-up in the season but avoids the defeat as his side the New York Mets manages a 6-5 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 5, 2012 in the third game of the three match series
at Citi Field, New York.
New York ran away with the win after being behind one run before the start of the ninth. Largely, the Phillies were dominant. Their starter Cole Hamels threw seven quality innings. Despite the fact he gave up two home-runs, he left the club with a lead on
completion of his time on the mound.
It was their relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon who betrayed them in the ninth. In less than one inning, he gave up two runs as he blew the lead.
Meanwhile, David Wright turned out a star performer for Mets. Striking a single to right at a time when it was needed the most, he delivered the Mets a victory which looked unlikely throughout the game.
Wright drove in four runs while facing five at-bats. Excited by the victory, he aims to replicate this performance in their next series before the All-Star Break.
"It's feels great to win a game like this, but we have to be prepared to win tomorrow," Wright said. "It would be really nice to win another series before the break."
With regard to their starter, Mets had a disappointing seven innings from Dickey. It was one of the rare games where his knuckle-ball was unable to block the flow of runs.
Being hit 11 times on the mound, Dickey will be making sure this will not trigger a decline and that he will come out stronger next time.
Besides, he is in the rotation for the National League All-Star game and therefore getting back to his best form is extremely important.
Talking about his no-decision game, Dickey acknowledged that his performance was poor and a loss was to be a more appropriate status of it.
"I didn't deserve a no-decision, I deserved to lose tonight," Dickey said. "The guys picked me up."
Despite the fact New York won the game, signs of the Phillies growing stronger can be observed. Their offence is stepping up more often now. Therefore, opponents can brace for challenges they are going to put up in upcoming games.
