New York Mets defeat Washington Nationals 4-3 at Citi Field - MLB Update
Centre-fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a brilliant homer as the New York Mets outclass Washington Nationals 4-3 win on April 9, 2012 at Citi Field in New York.
The Mets are surprising in every game as they are currently on top of the table. A side experts predicted will be the weakest in the division, the Mets is proving many people wrong. Their offence, rotation and defence have been spot on so far in the season.
Defeating the favourites in the division, the Nationals is not a small feat, especially with the pitchers that they posses are ranked as some of the best in the League.
A side consisting largely of younger players has never stimulated any one about their ability to come out so hard on the pitchers like Edwin Jackson.
Nieuwenhuis turned out belligerent on the plate and while rightly justifying with his position after Andres Torres’s injury, he thrashed a homer and added two RBIs.
By the time Torres met with an injury in the first game against Atlanta Braves, Mets came across a “last nail in the coffin” like scenario as they already did not have much on their offence to support them.
However as it is turning out for the moment, it looks that everything that happened with the Mets was just to prove a blessing in disguise later.
Manager Terry Collins is ecstatic over the stunning show they put up in the game.
"Everybody is excited. We know that it's a long year, but we want to show our fans that maybe we are better than everyone expects us to be," Collins said. "It's never about the effort with these guys."
It was not an easy victory as Nationals were ahead of them in the start. So neck-to-neck both sides progressed in the innings ensuing, it took the bottom of the ninth that the Mets stood out as the winner.
Daniel Murphy completed the winning run for the Mets on a throwing error by the Nationals’ reliever Henry Rodriguez.
Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey did not have the best of the times on the mound and managed eight strike-outs in little more than five innings he pitched.
He conceded 10 hits in the game, enough to have taken the game anywhere, to his fortune however things went his way throughout the encounter.
Since the Mets are at their best at the moment and seemingly in a position to defeat any side coming their way, only thing they have to fight against is complacency. More they keep it at bay and instead focus on where they can improve further the easier
it will it be for them to carry the momentum forward.
