New York Mets defeat Washington Nationals 6-3 – MLB Update
In a brilliant display of team work, the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 6-3 at the Nationals Park in Washington on April 27.
The Mets scored their first run in the third inning when Justin Turner hit an RBI single. At the end of third inning, the Mets took a lead of 1-0. During the fourth inning, the Mets’ batters were unable to post a run on the scorecard. On the other side,
the Nationals’ out-fielder Jayson Werth made a single on the sacrifice fly of Michael Morse in the fourth inning and attained third base off the single of Wilson Ramos.
The Nationals were on top after the fifth inning as they led 2-1. The sixth and seventh inning remained scoreless for both the teams as pitchers did their duties well in these innings. The Mets’ short-stop Jose Reyes had a walk and made a dive towards home-plate
after which he rebounded and was given as safe by the umpire of third base, Marvin Hudson. Reyes completed a single towards the third baseman Jerry Hairston Jr.
The Nationals led off until the eighth inning and it seemed that they will end with a victory but it turned the other way when the Mets played like winners and extended their lead.
The Mets got hold on all the bases with no out in the ninth inning and took three easy singles. However, the Mets’ pinch-hitter Chin-lung Hu completed his first single to take the lead 3-3 and gave the Sean Burnett his second save of the game. The Mets went
ahead 4-3 when Josh Thole made a single on a RBI groundout. Murphy took the lead for the Mets after the continuous intervals, as he made a double in the ninth inning to end the lead 6-3.
The Mets starter R.A. Dickey allowed two runs on eight hits including two earned runs and struck out three batters in six inning pitches. Francisco Rodriguez threw in the ninth inning for his sixth save and ended well by striking out one hitter.
The Nationals become the first team in the Major Leagues whose starter has delivered a minimum five innings in a game. Tom Gorzelanny pitched superbly as he permitted a single run on five hits including four strike-outs in six inning pitches.
