New York Mets edged New York Yankees 7-6 at the Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie in Florida on Tuesday, April 3 in their Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
The Yankees, who spent considerable amount of money on their pitching rotation, will be disappointed with the effort of their pitchers on Tuesday. Ivan Nova paid heavily for his unforced errors in Yankees 7-6 loss to the Mets. Struggling to control his fastballs
and curveballs, Nova went for five runs and eight hits in just over two innings as his ERA for the spring damaged to 8.06.
"Today was one of the worst days of my life," Nova said. "I wasn't pitching right. I felt good today, but I couldn't throw my fastball for strikes and I couldn't locate my pitches, and I don't feel good about that."
"Sometimes you feel right, and you're not," Nova said. "It's spring training for me right now, so I just have to look forward to the season."
CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda will be the number one and number two starters for the Yankees this season. With Michael Pineda, Phil Hughes, Freddy Garcia and Ivan Nova competing for the last three starting spots, many considered Yankees’ pitching lineup
as one of the best in American League. However, it seems now Yankees isn’t invincible after all.
Nova produced great performances last season to achieve an impressive 16-4 record and 3.70 ERA. In a post game interview, Nova admitted that he had a poor day on the field and he will be looking to make a strong comeback in his next MLB appearance.
"At times he's thrown as hard as I've seen him," Girardi said. "He's frustrated with the way he's throwing the ball but he won a lot of games for us last year."
With their win over their neighbours, the Mets improved their spring win-loss record to 9-19 on Tuesday. Although the Mets have not been able to live up to the expectations this season, they will take a lot of confidence from their win over the Yankees.
Upsetting the Yankees, the Mets gained crucial winning momentum going into the regular season.
