New York Mets edged out 5-6 by Cincinnati Reds – MLB Update
The New York Mets went down 5-6 against Cincinnati Reds on Monday, September 25 at Citi Field in New York.
The loss reduced the Mets to fourth position in NL East and it is likely to be their finishing point this season. This finish will not be a fitting farewell for Jose Reyes, who might be playing his last game for the Mets on Wednesday, September 28.
Reyes, on the contrary, is having the best season of his career. Three hits from his four at-bats on Monday pushed his average to .334, edging past Milwaukee Brewers’ Ryan Braun who is stationed at .333 for the season. No player from either team has been
crowned a batting Champion and this is a good opportunity for one of them to win top honours.
Brandon Phillips scored the first run for Reds in the first inning before Dave Sappelt doubled the lead in the second inning.
Homer Bailey kept things under control for the first two innings for the Reds but a three-run third inning saw the Mets eradicate the deficit and impose a one-run lead on the visitors. Jose Reyes scored the first run before Nick Evans produced a two-run
double down right-field, allowing Ruben Tejada and David Wright a run each.
Chris Heisey had a brilliant outing for the Nationals. He drove in three runs and went 3-for-5 in addition to the two runs that he scored to keep Washington in contention. The Mets regained their lead in the bottom of the fourth but Heisey responded strongly
in the seventh with a go-ahead home-run to take the Nationals two runs ahead of the home-team.
Talking to reporters after the game, Heisey said, "I'm happy with that. I wouldn't have expected it coming into the year. I never was a home run hitter until this year, really. I couldn't really tell you why I'm hitting home runs now."
A Reyes double in the eighth inning allowed Mike Baxter to reduce the deficit to just one-run but the former, showing emotions, continued his run towards third base but ended up being tagged out. Reyes said, "I went too far. I should have stayed there. I
already was in scoring position."
The Mets have two more games to play at Citi Field this season before a large-scale renovation will see the pitchers’ ballpark transform to a batters’ ballpark. It will be interesting to see how the Mets will bid farewell to the home-grown All-Star whom
they signed when he was 16. Twelve years later, Reyes feels that it will be tough for him to separate ways with a ballclub that has groomed him to become a class player.
