New York Mets face 2-7 defeat against San Francisco Giants in twin bill - MLB Update
Starter Dillon Gee follows Miguel Batista in recording a loss with the New York Mets in a twin bill as their club is defeated 2-7 by the San Francisco Giants on April 23, 2012 at Citi Field in New York, NY.
Hardly were the Mets able to re-collect their thoughts and think on what went wrong in the first game, as they got trampled over under the miseries of their earlier defeat. Giants rightly exploited the opportunity and kept them to just two runs in the game.
The Mets hitters will think on putting up an improved show after being beaten thoroughly by the starter in the last game. However, Giants’ second starter Madison Bumgarner turned out even better as he threw seven perfect innings and gave up just one run,
taking his season ERA to 2.96.
For Gee, it was a rather forgettable day. Being struck for two homers and 12 hits in the game, Gee will go back and have a hard talk with himself in front of the mirror.
Manager Terry Collins was blunt in admitting a poor show by his side. Growing a little merciful on his pitchers, he believed Giants’ switch-hitting strength was too enigmatic that hurlers will hardly find the control they like otherwise.
"They're a tough team to pitch against. They run all those switch-hitters at you. They just outhit us and outpitched us tonight. It was pretty simple," Collins said.
Two back-to-back defeats have put the Mets in different shape, vastly different from what they were two games back. The kind of gradual rise they were enjoying and their kind of stealth journey to the playoff spot has taken a serious blow now.
Gee was to become their most relied upon starter and the fact his confidence will be low, he will have to do hard work before restoring his best. All this however is going to affect the Mets overall progress ahead in the season.
Their shortstop Ruben Tejada went 0-for-5. Similarly second baseman Daniel Murphy missed two at-bats while contributing one RBI.
Manager will look to see his side an improved one in the games to come. For this to happen, a positive mindset of the players will play a vital role. It will be interesting to see how successful they will be on this front.
