New York Mets face 4-5 defeat against Arizona Diamondbacks as their bullpen betrays - MLB
Relief pitcher Jon Rauch falls short of blocking the Arizona Diamondbacks from getting past the lead as the New York Mets are beaten 4-5 in first game of three match series at Citi Field in New York, NY on May 4, 2012.
After adding four runs in the bottom of third, the Mets had taken the lead. As few quiet innings passed along, the Mets were on the verge of victory.
Much to their disappointment however, the Diamondbacks made a fiery return in the eighth by bringing three runs.
Part of a dramatic recovery by the Diamondbacks was led by Cody Ransom. He hit two times in three at-bats and contributed three RBIs in the process.
Mets’ starter Dillon Gee was called up after six innings. He struck-out six, gave up two runs and walked three times in the game.
Bullpen betrayed the Mets, as their lead was blown at a time when they were well on their way to win.
Every reliever sent on the mound after Gee, went for a run. If Gee were able to throw few more innings, one can say, the Mets may have won.
Diamondbacks won mainly because their bullpen threw solid innings late in the game. Compared to Mets’ starter Gee, the Diamondbacks’ however fared extremely poor and yet his side embraced the victory.
Surprisingly the Mets sent Kirk Nieuwenhuis late in the line-up. Instead they brought shortstop Ruben Tejada up the order in his place.
Tejada went 1-for-4 while completing one run. The fact third baseman David Wright is hitting well in almost every game spells a huge positive for the Mets.
Wright is currently maintaining .395/.505/.580, a kind of performance that can easily put him among the best at the end of the season. Only if he keeps himself away from occasional injuries, the Mets have a lot to witness from him this year.
Only potential worry for the Mets is their pitching staff. They are gravely missing a kind of starter that can take them through scoreless seven to eight innings in a game.
If they can manage to draw this kind of performance from their starters consistently, they certainly have a glittering season ahead.
