New York Mets face humiliating 0-9 defeat against Detroit Tigers in Spring Training - MLB Update
New York Mets suffer an out and out humiliation in their Grapefruit League contest against Detroit Tigers by losing 0-9 in a game played at Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida on March 16, 2012 as their starter Johan Santana gives up five runs
in just over two innings.
Mets looked an easy prey for Tigers throughout the play as none of their batters managed a run. Handful of hits that however were generated by them was mere a weak contacts and thus were only dangerous for the base runners to take a risk on. There is no
wonder why any RBI’s came off until the end.
Bulk of the credit will easily go to Tigers’ starter Rick Porcello, who went scoreless in four innings while grabbing three strike-outs. On no occasion he let loose on his pitches and kept hoodwinking batters one after another.
"The results were good," Porcello said. "Just continuing to go out there and try to throw quality strikes. I had decent feel for the changeup and slider that was a plus. I'm making progress. I'm just trying to make steps forward and get ready. At the same
time, I'm trying to keep that mental, competitive approach out there and get guys out."
Following a two scoreless games, Santana endured his poorest Spring Training outing so far. While he was being hammered in third before he was called back by the manager, an element of complacency was palpable in him.
As he was constantly found scratching the mound, trying to give an impression of as if there was something wrong with the mound, even manager Terry Collins had to intervene to see if he was comfortable.
Later it came out however that the mound was soft, inhibiting him to grip up his foot there properly.
Along with him, Mets' reliever Ramon Ramirez also looked below par. He conceded two runs in one inning while drawing two strike-outs.
With another defeat, Mets have plunged further on the table with poor .250 PCT. Not just in terms of losses they are struggling, they look equally unimpressive with regards to number of runs scored thus far.
Even less than that of currently lowest side on the table, Atlanta Braves, who have managed 53 runs, the Mets runs scored are just 45. Something they will be looking forward to improve in their next couple of games.
