New York Mets fall 1-6 to San Francisco Giants at Citi Field - MLB Update
Starter Miguel Batista pitches out of the stretch as his side the New York Mets lose to San Francisco Giants 1-6 in a twin bill at Citi Field in New York, NY on April 23, 2012.
Giants were perfect right from the start. After the first run they gave to the Mets in second, all through the ninth they never allowed completion of any run.
After a dream regular season start, the Mets have started to experience a slight decline.
The fear is that just what happened with them in Spring Training when all of a sudden with few poor outings they plunged to lowest on the table and never stood up, the same can happen again.
Batista was called up just after little more than three innings as he gave up six runs, walking three and allowing seven hits.
The game was a culmination of a decline being observed from the last few games with the Mets, in particular their pitching department.
Batista rightly acknowledged his flaws after the game and said that deviation in his location actually hurt his quest.
Not all the throws he sent however he stated were bad, just the fact few good ones got hit purely that confidence went down and everything grew awry as a result.
"I missed my location I would say three times, cost me two runs," Batista said. "Posey hit a good pitch, I was surprised. The other guy, it was right down the middle."
Giants witnessed an ideal start from Tim Lincecum, who threw five innings and struck-out eight, recording his first win of the season.
The fact Lincecum has had a below par season ERA of 8.20, thus a pitcher who was low on confidence, the performance the Mets put up is actually worse than it apparently looks. Instead of capitalising on this, they presented themselves for exploitation.
Only positive coming out for the Mets in the game is two hits from new comer Kirk Nieuwenhuis as he is hitting .341 at the moment.
What can cost the Mets more than few defeats is a fall in momentum they have carried since the start of the season. Manager Terry Collins will be looking forward to keep it afloat for as long as he can.
