New York Mets fall to 1-8 defeat against Houston Astros in third game of series - MLB Update
Starter Chris Schwinden gives up two home-runs and the New York Mets are drubbed by the Houston Astros 1-8 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Tex on May 2, 2012.
In third game of the series, the Mets had a chance for a face-saving victory at the back of two losses in a row against the Astros. They fared even worse on Wednesday.
Two homers in two innings had pushed the Mets back, right in the beginning and afterwards the Astros just built on their lead.
On the other hand, the Mets did not find their hitters stepping up the way they have been throughout the season.
While David Wright did live up to the consistency he is showing, second baseman, Daniel Murphy and first baseman Ike Davis went hitless.
The Mets had only seven hits in the game, in a stark contrast to 15 hits the Astros managed.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, the left-fielder went 1-for-3.
Schwinden was taken off the mound after four innings, but much to the disappointment of manager Terry Collins, the reliever Manny Acosta proved just equally flawed in plugging the run-leakage.
In four innings, Schwinden conceded five runs and struck-out two. Acosta allowed three runs and six hits in two innings.
Wandy Rodriguez’s seven innings restricted the Mets to just one run. He struck-out five for the Astros.
Third baseman for the Astros, Chris Johnson had a perfect outing on the plate, hitting four in four at-bats. The six RBIs, he contributed were his career highest. With this, he improves his on-base-percentage to .340.
It was the 12th loss by the Mets in the season and one more will put their PCT at .50, equalling that of the Philadelphia Phillies. Against this backdrop, the manager will work to make sure a long winning streak is built from now onward.
Pitching department has some serious issues. In the last game, Jonathon Niese had to be called back just as soon as he went on the mound and today Schwinden was roughed up similarly.
In light of this, the Mets will be looking to work out their weak-areas and make sure they do not repeat the mistakes they are doing time-and-again.
