New York Mets fall to Cincinnati Reds 1-6 as R.A. Dickey surrenders home runs - MLB Update
The starter R.A. Dickey gives up three home-runs in the game as the New York Mets are beaten by the Cincinnati Reds 1-6 at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio on August 15, 2012 in the second game of the three match series.
The slump of the Mets' offence continues.
Mets have been struggling in the last many weeks. On Wednesday, they just were unable to turn their fate around.
Meanwhile, their starter R.A. Dickey who leads their rotation in terms of wins and ERA in the season was roughed up on Wednesday.
Dickey is being considered one of the favorites for winning the Cy Young award for 2012 regular season. His performances throughout the season have put him on the list of the best pitchers in the National League.
However, the loss by him on Wednesday has dented his progress.
The five runs and the 10 hits he allowed in the match in the six innings allowed the Reds to record an easy victory.
Jeremy Hefner followed Dickey on the mound. However his presence had to prove insignificant as the Reds were already ahead of the Mets by substantial number of runs.
Witnessing just four hits from the offence will be demoralising for Mets’ manager Terry Collins. Already out of contention, the Mets are looking to improve their winning percentage and sign off the season on a positive note.
Meanwhile, Dickey believes that the bracelets due to which umpire approached him in the game for their removal were worn by him throughout the season. Therefore, he was unhappy in the first place on being asked about this.
Furthermore, Dickey rues the reality of throwing the wrong knuckle-ball and watching the batter making the most of it by slamming a mammoth hit.
"I've had them on for every start, every bullpen session," Dickey said. "I was a little angry at first. When you throw mediocre knuckleballs and they don't miss them, they can be hit a long way."
The Mets are sinking to the lowest ebb in terms of their performance. While in the first half they were fairly stable with regard to winning games, right now they are piling up defeats.
They will be trying to find a way out to get rid of their present slump in the upcoming games.
