New York Mets farm system ranking to boost during 2013-MLB Update
After remaining low in the ranking of the farm systems of the Major League clubs for the last couple of years, the New York Mets can hope that 2013 will see them improve immensely.
The trade of R.A Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays has caused an inflow of a number of star prospects in their system.
Resultantly, the minor league farms of the club have strengthened. The organisation can look forward to becoming one of the formidable oppositions down the line.
Over the last couple of years, the Mets are being criticised for having below par prospects in their farm system. The hope for the future was little for their fans.
The yearly rankings issued by Baseball America spoke volumes of the mediocrity of minor league players.
In comparison to them, their competitors in the National League East such as the Washington Nationals made remarkable jumps in the ranking.
Certainly, posting a dismal ranking was disheartening for the fans, because nothing can be worse than the fact that the club has a dark future ahead, as was reflected from the ratings.
Fortunately now, Dickey has provided the club such players on being traded to the Blue Jays that the Mets can think favourably about their future.
The Editor for Baseball America, Jim Callis, has mentioned that the Mets were extremely weak with regard to minor league farms during the last few years.
Apart from some pitchers, there was nothing there for them to pin hopes on for the future.
“Their system isn’t real deep,” Jim Callis said. “The pitchers they had at Brooklyn are real interesting, but that’s a long way off. If they’re looking to trade prospects for a proven outfielder a year from now, I’m not sure they can do that with Single-A
pitchers.”
However, realising impact of recent acquisitions by the Mets in their farm system, Callis is of the view that they no longer possess a weak farm system.
“They got a lot of value in d’Arnaud and Syndegaard,” Callis said. “That should take them from the bottom third to the middle of the pack in the rankings. Mets fans will probably say, ‘Only the middle of the pack?” But that’s actually a significant boost.”
It will be interesting to see the minor league ranking of the Mets by Baseball America for 2013.
