New York Mets go past Miami Marlins 3-2 as Ruben Tejada manages a single in the ninth-MLB Update
Shortstop Ruben Tejada singles to left centre and helps in scoring one run in the ninth inning as the New York Mets go past the Miami Marlins 3-2 at Citi Field, New York on September 23, 2012 in the last game of the three match series.
Mets jumped to a two-run lead in the first inning before they remained scoreless through the completion of the eighth. The fact the Mets’ lead was not enough provided the Marlins a number of opportunities in the match to cut in to it.
Miami came close to surpassing the lead of the Mets in the fifth inning when they added two runs on the scoreboard.
From there onward Marlins may have continued with the momentum but owing to the perfect innings thrown by the Mets’ relievers they failed to outscore the latter.
With the fact they ended up the innings from the sixth until the last one scoreless, there was always the possibility that the Mets will be able to reclaim their lead.
The bottom of the ninth announced the conclusion of the game in the favour of the Mets as Tejada hammered a single toward the left and sent the base-runner aboard.
In the beginning, Mets saw their third baseman David Wright slamming a two-run homer.
Although New York won, their offence was far from satisfactory.
As far as the pitchers were concerned, Chris Young started for New York. He completed six innings and gave up one run. He was not credited with the win and instead the relief pitcher Bobby Parnell claimed it.
Home-run coming off from Wright in the game was a morale booster for Young as the latter could afford to be attacking from the mound thereafter.
"When David hit that two-run homer, it set the tone and gave me some room for error," Young said. "It was nice to go out there and be aggressive."
Wright speaks about the single struck by Tejada in the last inning.
"We all kind of have a tendency to bring our last at-bat up there with us," Wright said. "It was nice to see Ruben come through after they kind of picked on him earlier in the game."
Both the Mets and the Marlins are currently out of contention. They will be looking to regain some lost pride by winning as many matches as they can from there onward.
