New York Mets have historical comeback as they defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8 - MLB Update
The New York Mets finally decided to get their act together as they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8, in the last of the four game series on June 2 at Citi Field, New York.
Apparently all that was needed for the Mets to step up their game and have a historical come-back was Terry Collins’ wrath. Manager for the Mets, Collins had ratted out about his team’s sloppy play and their inability to perform and complete games just a
day before and that is what must have triggered such a reaction from the Mets. Their come-back was the second biggest in the history of the franchise.
Collins obviously pleased with his team being in the news for a win instead of their lowly performances said, "You need wins like this to show you can do it, I think it means a lot to us, and hopefully this is something we feed off of."
The win came as a pleasant vindication for the Mets who performed horribly just a night before against the Pirates and suffered eight losses in 11 of their previous games. Just a night before, the Pirates had won their 17th game away from their
PNC Park. This meant they equalled the total wins they had in all of last season in just three months of this season. As the away team, Pittsburgh has managed to win seven out of their 10 series.
Jason Isringhausen grabbed his first season win for the Mets after his first win with the team way back in 1999. That day he had pitched five and two third innings as a starter and allowed two runs as New York defeated the Toronto Blue Jays. The win that
came on June 2 marked the longest time between two wins by a pitcher in the history of the franchise.
When the game started off, the Pirates unleashed three runs within the first inning and to everyone present in the stadium, it looked like the Mets were on their way to suffer another shameful defeat. If anyone had doubt about the Mets defeat, they were
certain by the time the second and third inning finished off, the Pirates scoring four more runs that totalled a hard to chase seven runs.
That is when Carlos Beltran probably thought that enough was enough and belted out a mammoth home-run that flew for 428 feet as Jose Reyes and Jim Turner scored. He later doubled in the game even though he was playing with weak knees. The sixth inning saw
the Mets pull it together and put up four runs on the scoreboard as they tied the score with the shocked Pirates.
The Mets, not ready to take another loss took the lead in the eighth inning as Beltran walked and Josh Thole scored, totalling New York’s score to nine. Even with a run in the ninth inning, the Pirates could not win against the Mets who looked like they
were out for blood.
Looks like the Mets are glad that Terry Collins got mad.
