New York Mets humiliate San Francisco Giants 9-1 as Chris Young exhibits command on the mound - MLB
The starter Chris Young throws seven innings that help the New York Mets rout the San Francisco Giants 9-1 at AT&T Park, San Francisco, California on August 2, 2012 in the last game of the four match series.
The Mets enjoyed a run-rampage in the game. Putting Giants under pressure, they added four runs in the first inning. Before the Giants could fight back, New York slammed another run in the second inning, effectively taking the game away from the opposition.
New York’s starter Chris Young was solid on Thursday. Rebounding from the slump he was about to experience after being roughed up in the last few games, he finished a commanding spell of innings in the game. In his seven innings, he gave up one run and allowed
just four hits.
"It was great to contribute to a win," Young said. "The guys set the tone early with all the runs. It gave me some room for error and allowed me to be aggressive."
The relievers who succeeded him kept the pressure on the Giants intact, disallowing them to launch a counter-attack. While in general the Mets’ relief pitchers are prone to surrendering late in the innings and causing defeats as a result, on Thursday they
completed scoreless innings.
Offensively, New York's second baseman Ronny Cedeno stood out in the game. He connected three hits in five at-bats. The five RBIs he contributed helped the Mets immensely in posting sufficient number of runs in the game.
Apart from Cedeno, the third baseman David Wright and Scott Hairston struck productive hits.
Meanwhile, left fielder Jason Bay improved gradually on the plate. After struggling to step up and play an important role for the Mets in the last few games, Bay drove in for two runs on Thursday.
While Bay performed well on the plate, he is conscious of the improvements that he needs defensively.
''Every day game here is a nightmare,'' Bay said. ''It's always been like this. You get the sun, it's windy and there are no clouds. You hope to get a big lead so you don't get one on the sun and blow it.''
The Mets needed such a dominant performance in order to build long winning streaks ahead in the season. They will be looking to carry the momentum forward in the upcoming series.
