New York Mets humiliate Tampa Bay Rays 9-1 as R.A. Dickey throws nine innings - MLB Update
R.A. Dickey’s knuckle-ball works again as he throws a gem and takes the New York Mets to a commanding 9-1 win against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida in second game of the three match series on June 13, 2012.
Hitters posting runs and starter throwing one-hitter game, the Mets had an ideal day on the park.
While keeping the Rays quiet all through the game, they surged to a dominating lead. First four innings were scoreless for both sides. In the fifth, the Mets initiated progress and added three runs, which were followed by four runs in the sixth.
Dickey was the main architect of the Rays’ failure. A display of impeccable throws was seen, as Dickey breezed through the innings.
In nine innings, he struck-out 12 and gave up one unearned run. He brings his 2012 regular season ERA down to 2.20 and makes his way into the list of likely contenders for All-Star Game.
The season is turning out to be a dream for Dickey, who has not been as formidable in his career as he has become now. He is an excellent example of a pitcher who stood from the ground and reached heights by the dint of hard work and continuous improvements
in his pitching repertoire.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins heaped huge praise on him after the game.
"We're two plays from a perfect game," Collins said. "I've seen a lot of things. I've not seen a perfecto. Today I saw as close to that as I've ever been around in my 42 years. It's amazing, just truly amazing what he's done. To think two years ago this
guy was the first guy cut from this club to where he's at today, I absolutely salute the guy."
No home-run came from the Mets. Yet they kept adding runs on a regular interval.
Third-baseman David Wright made one hit in four at-bats and contributed two RBIs. Centre fielder, Andres Torres was a stand-out performer in terms of number of hits struck in the game as he went 3-for-5 on Wednesday.
If the Mets can draw same kind of performance from other starters in rotation, they can be serious contender in National League East Division.
