New York Mets humiliated 0-7 by Chicago Cubs as Jonathon Niese leaks runs - MLB Update
Jonathon Niese disappoints the New York Mets while starting as he takes the club to a humiliating 0-7 defeat against the Chicago Cubs on July 8, 2012, in third game of the three match series at Citi Field, New York.
Niese kept leaking runs throughout the game. While he found little support from the offence, his confidence went down, resulting in a number of hits being allowed by him.
He threw seven innings and gave up seven runs and was put under pressure right away in the first.
Cubs fetched four runs from his throws in the first before they waited until the start of the seventh to build on their lead.
Despite being roughed up in the beginning, Mets’ manager Terry Collins showed patience and hoped that Niese would rebound soon.
Unfortunately, Niese was lacking control, for most part of the game.
Meanwhile, Mets’ bullpen was relatively better. Their relievers finished scoreless innings. However, it was of little help as the Cubs’ lead had reached an unassailable level by then.
Offensively, Mets had eight hits on Sunday. Second baseman Daniel Murphy was their most successful batter in making connections as he went 3-for-4.
Talking about Cubs and how they took the game away from them, Collins appreciated their aggressive intent. It was the reason why they dominated throughout the game and never allowed Niese to come up with a strong resistance.
"They came out swinging," Collins said. "He was trying to get ahead (and) they were hammering the first pitch."
Such a thumping defeat will not be good for the confidence of the team.
At such a crucial juncture of the season, losing games will not help the Mets' contention in the Division. Therefore, improving their ranking on the National League East Division table will be difficult.
Meanwhile, their manager Collins will be conscious of the fact that they have dropped to third on table now, with the Atlanta Braves taking their position. Reclaiming the spot will require long-winning streaks. That will need consistent performances from
the starters and the hitters alike.
Conversely, if the Mets continue recording defeats, the Braves will have an opportunity to take their tally of wins to such a level from where challenging them will not be easy.
Therefore, the sooner the Mets put up solid shows and win games, the better it will be for their chances in the season.
