New York Mets humiliated 0-8 by Milwaukee Brewers despite David Wright surging - MLB
Starter Dillon Gee crumbles on the mound as the New York Mets are humiliated 0-8 by the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field, New York, NY on May 15, 2012 in second game of the two match series.
The Mets’ offence takes a nosedive after reaching a climax. Striking just six hits in 30 at-bats is largely unseen in their outings up until now in the season.
Centre fielder Andres Torres is going through a decline. Not connecting a single hit in last couple of games and not swinging on right moments are not great signs for him.
As he went 0-for-4 in the game, his batting average has gone down to .241.
Left fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis was going perfectly in the season. Ever since he has started coming down in the line-up, he is struggling. Though he still maintains an impressive batting average of .294, he will like to restore his form at the earliest.
The most depressing part of the game was constellation of hits Gee gave up. As he allowed seven runs in little more than five innings, very outcome of the game was made destined in favour of the Brewers.
One can argue therefore, even if the Mets' offence had come up with proper run-support, it was unlikely they will turn their fate around.
Furthermore, massive lead the Brewers had surged had disheartened their batters to an extent of giving up on the quest.
Since most of the runs came off in sixth, the Mets will regret their decision of continuing with their starter even after five innings.
If one puts aside little part of the sixth, the fact Gee has done great job on the whole is revealed.
He stuttered only because fatigue was taking toll on him.
Out of six hits the Mets generated, two were slammed by David Wright. Irrespective of an outcome of the game, Wright is contributing chunk of their total hits.
By taking his season batting average to an incredible .408, Wright has further enlivened speculations about whether he can make history or not.
If he can sustain his current batting average until conclusion of the season, he will be the first one to do so since 1941.
The game exposed certain loopholes with the Mets’ rotation. One will hope, the manager Terry Collins have spotted them and is working to sort them out.
