New York Mets humiliated by Cincinnati Reds 3-7 as Dillon Gee gives up two home runs - MLB Update
Starter Dillon Gee leaks two home-runs, taking the New York Mets to a 3-7 defeat against the Cincinnati Reds on June 15, 2012 in first game of the three match series at Citi Field, New York, NY.
Cincinnati surged to a convincing lead right from the start, adding two runs in the second and the third each. Meanwhile, Mets offered little resistance and were scoreless in first five innings.
Counter attack that the Mets launched in the sixth and the seventh was befittingly put to halt as Cincinnati kept their lead intact in the process.
Just few days ago, Mets drew a splendid show from starter R.A Dickey. On Friday, however the performance was just opposite, as another starter Gee struggled to get through innings.
Six innings he pitched cost four runs and five hits, letting Reds go on an initial run-rampage.
Giving up runs at beginning of the game had actually sealed the fate for Mets, because afterwards, pressure under which effort to blow the lead was made was ineffective, to say the least.
Relief pitcher, Jeremy Hefner stepped on the mound in the seventh for the Mets. This was the stage when a couple of scoreless innings will have brought Mets back into the game.
As Hefner conceded two runs in one inning, whatever little chances the Mets had for making a comeback diminished.
While starters of both team dithered on the mound, a solid performance was witnessed from Reds bullpen. Their relievers threw scoreless innings, keeping Mets at bay during penultimate moments of the game.
Along with the defeat, the Mets bagged another dismal reality in the game and that is an injury by left-fielder Jason Bay. He has recently recovered from concussion while making a belated entry in the season.
Mets’ third-baseman David Wright was heartfelt for Bay.
"It's a combination of the way he hustles, and bad luck. You feel for him. You know the way he's worked to overcome some of these injuries," Wright said. "Obviously, with the head injury, you know you've got to be very careful."
Losing first game of the series deprives a team of a psychological edge for the next contest. Instead of taking this in mind, Mets will hope to win the next two games and clinch a series victory.
