New York Mets invoke option of retaining David Wright for 2013 Major League regular season-MLB
New York Mets have finally made the announcement that they will use 2013 option on their third baseman David Wright.
As the negotiations for contract extension have not reached the conclusion yet, the Mets consider it safer to retain Wright for the next season.
As far as the intent of the management is concerned, the officials are aggressively pursuing the finalisation of the new agreement.
The Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson has often stated that offering contract extension to Wright is among the most important tasks that he will accomplish in the offseason.
Currently the deliberations are underway and it can be expected that soon the declaration of the renewal of the contract with Wright is also made by the Mets.
Just like the Mets, Wright is equally interested to stay in the same club. However, he has his reservations as well. While maintaining that playing for the Mets is his foremost priority, he has not ruled out the possibility of experiencing free agency.
Wright has been the most prolific batter for New York in 2012 regular season. Right from day one, he spearheaded their offence with consistent hits at the plate.
While the rest of the batting crew struggled in most of the occasions, Wright remained a stand out performer for the team throughout the season.
In the beginning, he was so excellent at the plate that some experts thought he will end up the season with a batting average more than .400. Their opinion was based on solid ground as Wright was striking hits in almost every game and it appeared that he
will continue doing so until the end.
Although later in the season Wright’s batting average declined, it remained at an enviable position by-and-large. Unfortunately Wright could not see his side qualifying for the post-season.
Wright will be looking forward to enter into the upcoming season with a same level of form. He will be pleased with the fact that the Mets have shown faith in his abilities by exercising the option on him.
It will be interesting to see as to what kind of contract extension the Mets grant to Wright in the days to come.
