New York Mets kick off Winter Meeting signing; make bold moves -MLB Update
While majority of the Major League Baseball (MLB) organisations looked hesitant in making changes around their clubs, the New York Mets broke the ice and made a series of bold moves that had varied opinions coming out of the league and analysts throughout
the baseball world in regard of how these differences could affect the team in the upcoming 2012 regular season.
No letting any negative criticism affect his plans for the day and what he had already executed, New York Mets general manager, Terry Collins smiled when he let reporters know about his very busy meetings.
"We rebuilt our bullpen in one day," Collins said.
It was easy to see that Collins had come in with a plan and came out happy that everything went in his way.
"Good, solid arms," Collins said talking about the three relievers and a hitter that he acquired on Tuesday, December 7, 2011. "We've got some depth now."
In a series of moves, the Mets moved centre fielder, Angel Pagan to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder, Andres Torres and pitcher, Ramon Ramirez.
Collins might not have wanted to let a few of the players go that are now on different teams but making changes on the club were something that could not be denied and resulted in the need of trades.
"We're going to miss Angel. Played great here," Collins said. "But again, our target was to rebuild the bullpen and he was a piece that they wanted badly."
Ramirez, a veteran right hander, was someone who will be providing the Mets with a pitching and hitting depth.
"I know one thing: He gets lefties out. He's got the good sinker," Collins said. "We're going to be able to spread out all the workload."
As the 2011 MLB season came to an end, it was unclear that Angel would be getting a contract or not, but now Collin decision has certainly become clear that he was planning to exchange the player for quite a while now, which makes the move more definable
now.
The Mets also signed right hand reliever, Jon Rauch, to a one-year contract along with Frank Francisco to a two-year deal.
