New York Mets likely to sign contract extension with left-hander Jon Niese – MLB Update
Some serious deliberations seem underway at New York Mets regarding financial management, as starter Jon Niese is likely to be given contract extension beyond 2015.
His retention will put off his free agency prospects on one side and on the other will allow the club to gauge their future cost reliably. The fact, still three years remain in completion of his existing contract proves where management is looking at right
now.
By doing so, Mets aim to make well-informed decisions in days to follow about which players to acquire during the trade and how much capacity they have in going after them. They suspect unseen troubles by spending more in one area and less in other and thus
they are looking for predictability.
Possible scheme of agreement is likely to be based on a contract Derek Holland had with Texas Rangers last month worth $28.5 million five year contract.
Niese will be facing an interesting trade-off. After all, free agency can be equally enthralling for him. His 4.39 career ERA is not that compelling, as his strike-out to walks ratio has been incredible. He can provide stability to any side by keeping batters
guessing all the time on the plate and not giving them a walk.
His 12-6 curveball mixed up with a change-up brings variety to any side and thus usefulness can materialise any time.
Since official confirmation has not been reported yet, modalities of the contract cannot be known. Reports were leaked by a person close to the club who sought anonymity.
Conscious of what lies ahead, the club is working out issues in a rather conservative fashion. Earlier reports surfaced that Mike Pelfrey, their starter with 493 career strike-outs, will be released in an attempt to save money from the actual amount club
had to pay him at season end.
Nothing official then followed however that exhibited the mindset that the management has resorted to after confronting financial crisis lately.
Sources suggest that deal will be finalised before opening day. Regardless of an outcome of the deal, one thing is certain that Mets will be entering regular season with little winning prospects.
As experts believe and as fans will also wish that the Mets can still turn out to be a surprise performer. It will be interesting to see how far they go in the upcoming regular season.
