New York Mets lose out to Los Angeles Dodgers 3-8 as they stutter defensively - MLB Update
The New York Mets allow the Los Angeles Dodgers to snap their rising losing streak as fielders make errors and cost them a 3-8 defeat at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles on July 1, 2012 in fourth game of the four match series.
From the start, Mets were leading. Until the fourth, they were one-run ahead. Bottom of the fifth triggered their decline as the Dodgers added two runs and surged to the lead.
Afterwards, it was an easy passage for them, with little resistant coming off from the Mets.
Starter Dillon Gee was a bit unfortunate in allowing four runs in six innings. Of the four runs, two were unearned, which means that if the fielders had done the job right, his numbers will have been impressive.
Similar to what happened with Gee; Ramon Ramirez who replaced him in the seventh endured two unearned runs, thanks to fumbles by the fielders.
Meanwhile, the Mets’ offence did not rise to the occasion when its contribution was needed. Failing to chase down the accelerating Dodgers in later half of the game, it brought just five hits.
Centre-fielder Andres Torres did not connect even a single hit in three at-bats. Other than short-stop Ruben Tejada and third baseman David Wright, most of the batters struggled on the plate.
Mets’ catcher Nickeas was sympathetic with Dillon as he was not supported defensively.
Nickeas himself was poor behind the plate, failing to glove throws properly and causing runs as a result. It is something he acknowledges after the game.
"I thought Dillon had good stuff," Mike Nickeas said. "Unfortunately, he's kind of been the guy on our staff that has been a little unlucky. We haven't played tremendous defense behind him and we haven't scored a ton of runs when he's been out there. But
I think he's thrown much better than what his won-lost record shows. And if he keeps doing that, it'll all even out for him in the end."
Mets’ manager Terry Collins is disappointed on being unable to draw the kind of performance he was fancying from the right-handers in the line-up.
Apart from this, defence is another area he will be concerned about. Therefore, before the next series starts, Collins will be making sure mistakes are not repeated.
