New York Mets lose to Cincinnati Reds 1-3 as Chris Young gives up three runs - MLB Update
Starter Chris Young gives up three runs in the fifth, costing the New York Mets a 1-3 loss against the Cincinnati Reds on June 17, 2012, at Citi Field, New York, NY, in third game of the three match series.
All was going fine for the Mets until start of top of the fifth. Surging to one run lead in the second, the Mets were hoping that their starter will continue throwing scoreless innings all through the game and will hand them the victory.
From the way Young pitched first four innings, expecting this was not unreasonable.
However, as three runs were given up and Reds were allowed the lead, the Mets failed to bounce back into the game, later. Reds’ starter Johnny Cueto delivered a valuable spell of seven innings and kept things tight for the Mets.
Not just the starter, Cincinnati relievers were equally effective.
With Cueto out from the mound and relievers taking over, last two innings provided best opportunity for the Mets to blow the lead. As they squandered the chance, failure was destined.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins talked of a factor that led to their demise. Tracing failure to a down the line-up offensive support Reds drew from their hitters, he stated, inability of the Mets to stand out on this front resulted into defeat.
''We got outpitched, we got outhit,'' Collins said. ''They did exactly what we've been doing, and that is they get the top of the order up with that outstanding middle of the lineup they have to come in and drive in runs.''
None of the Mets’ hitters was able to make big connections. Third baseman David Wright struck one hit in four at-bats.
Since Jason Bay was not playing due to the injury, the Mets’ line-up was without a powerful hitter. They cannot afford their offence floundering and providing little run-support. Getting Bay to return to the season is extremely important.
Throughout the series, the club has looked mediocre. In contrast to a great performance their offence has been putting up, for most part of the season, series was a disappointment.
Instead of letting miseries suffered in the series take a toll on the players’ minds the Mets will hope that they appear next time fresher and more determined for victories.
