New York Mets make record comeback to defeat St. Louis Cardinals 8-6 – MLB Update
The New York Mets bagged an 8-6 consolation win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, September 22 after having lost the first two games of the three-game series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
Although the loss had little meaning in context of the series, it had a lot of significance as far as the Wild Card standings are concerned. Moving just 1.5 games in-sight of the top notch after two wins, the Cardinals were pushed to two games behind Atlanta
Braves with just six games remaining in the regular season.
Cardinals’ manager Tony LaRussa, however, affirmed that the team morale is still sky-high and it was nothing more than just a loss.
Leading by four-runs at the end of the eighth inning, Cardinals leaked six runs in the last inning to lose their 70th game of the season. Had they won this game, they would have been just half a game away from embarking the post-season journey.
This was just their third loss in the last 16 games, depicting their craving for the playoffs.
LaRussa said, "Don't make a mistake and say we're heartbroken. Our heart's beating. We won the series, get ready for tomorrow."
Allen Craig smashed a two-run homer towards left-field to start proceedings for the Cardinals and Jake Westbrook followed with four scoreless innings to give the home-team an upper hand in the game.
Josh Thole scored for the Mets in the fifth inning to reduce the deficit to one run, but a scoring spree by the Cardinals thereafter saw the lead surge to five runs by the seventh inning.
Lance Berkman scored in the fifth inning to follow Albert Pujols’ home-run before Daniel Descalso and Yadier Molina scored a run each in the seventh, taking the score to 6-1.
Willie Harris initiated the scoring spree in the ninth inning which eventually saw the Mets add six runs, marking the biggest ninth-inning comeback in the history of Mets. Previously, the Mets had scored five runs against Chicago Cubs in 2007 to win from
1-5 down.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins stated that winning against a top-team in this manner, especially after having lost nine of the previous 11 games, is a huge achievement.
With six games left for Braves and Cardinals, the Wild Card race is all-set to be a ripper.
