New York Mets’ manager Terry Collins confident of Johan Santana’s preparations – MLB News
The New York Mets’ team manager Terry Collins is confident for his ace starting pitcher Johan Santana’s level of commitment and how well he is working in the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training in Arizona.
Talking to the media with coolness, he commented about Santana and his preparations for the next MLB season after resting a whole season due to shoulder surgery.
“In my mind right now, in my heart, he’ll be ready – I don’t think there’s any question,” Collins said Tuesday during his state of the Mets address to open camp. “He’s gearing himself up for that to be ready and we’re going to take this very slowly and cautiously.”
Later, Santana also talked about his own game and described in the media as how he now feels about his fitness. Santana said, “Going through everything I went last year, one day you feel good, one day you don’t feel so good, it’s like a rollercoaster. I’m feeling really good and hopefully toward the end, mid training, we’ll have a better idea where we’re at and see if we’ll be ready for Opening Day.”
During this season’s Spring Training, Mike Pelfrey and R.A. Dickey are other two pitchers who also seem positive and ready to go ahead into a fresh season.
Santana, who missed the entire season of 2011 due to a shoulder surgery and the subsequent after effects is now feeling much better and is showing great optimism to play an active role in the Mets’ next year’s competition.
Mets’ on the other hand also know how important Santana’s potential come-back is for the team and for future consistent results. Last season, the Mets’ also could not perform well and lost too many games failing to qualify for the post season.
Looking at Santana’s past performances and career averages, experts believe as he certainly is a productive player and whenever he makes a comeback, the results will automatically follow in favour of the Mets’ franchise. During his professional baseball career so far, he has achieved a consistent 3.10 ERA along with 133-69 win loss record, 1877 strikeouts and 1.10 WHIP.
