New York Mets may begin contract extension negotiations with David Wright next week-MLB News
Sources close to the matter have claimed that New York Mets will kick off formal negotiations with their All-Star third baseman David Wright next week, regarding possible contract extension. Wright will be a free agent if the Mets do not renew his contract.
Mets have shown intent to retain Wright for the upcoming seasons as they believe he is the mainstay of their offence. Similarly Wright has expressed his desire to remain a part of the Mets.
However, Wright may have concerns as far as the modalities of the contract extension are concerned.
He may be fancying such clauses in the contract which may be difficult for the Mets to accept.
In light of this despite the fact that both the parties have uttered willingness to work out a deal, contentious issues may prevail and may even halt the whole process of the negotiations.
Wright’s agent will be making preparations in the face of the beginning of the talks. He will be looking to fetch the best possible deal for Wright.
Although the date for the formal meeting has not been finalised, sources have confirmed that the parties will not take a long time before they sit on the table.
Wright is one of those players on whom the Mets relied heavily during the regular season. He has been the most consistent batter for them.
His ability to strike hits in most of the matches is one of the reasons why the Mets started off the season on an impressive note.
New York in the beginning of 2012 Major League Baseball regular season performed extremely well. Until their decline began, they gave an impression that they are going to clinch the Wild Card spot at the end of the season.
Wright initially was so prolific at the plate that his batting average was more than .400.
Before his hitting percentage came down, he led many experts to believe that he may end up the season with an average around .400. As a result, they maintained that he will break a number of records previously registered in the Major League.
Wright will be excited prior to the beginning of the talks. He will be expecting a blockbuster deal from the Mets. It will be interesting to see what type of contract he ultimately gets.
