New York Mets may spend money on David Wright but will be reluctant about R.A. Dickey - MLB Update
Contract extension earned by third baseman Ryan Zimmerman from Washington Nationals before the start of 2012 regular season can be the reason why the New York Mets grant a renewal of their agreement to infielder David Wright.
While Wright has the standard price in the form of the agreement of Zimmerman, starting pitcher R.A. Dickey can feel unfortunate in this regard.
Although Dickey was remarkable during 2012 season from day one, it is unlikely that he will receive renewal of his agreement from the Mets.
He has an excellent trade value at the moment, which means that the Mets can address their outfield needs by sending Dickey to another organisation in exchange for reliable prospects.
Officials of the club want to see Dickey in the club but at the same time they know the financial limitations of the organisation. Freezing money for a number of years for a pitcher who is aging has risks such as the drastic decline in performance and an
extreme financial burden for the team down the line.
On the other hand, Dickey will be banking on his tremendous success for expecting a substantial offering from the club. Besides, fans are excited about him as he brought the honour of being the Cy Young Award winner for the team this year.
They are acting as a pressure group before the organisation for making the officials grant contract extension to Dickey. Far from being realistic and taking into account the age factor, they are hopeful that Dickey will ensure more laurels for the team in
the upcoming seasons.
Experiences in the past play an important role when the clubs plan offering deals to their prospective free agents. In the case of Dickey, the Mets find it very hard to know someone from history who has lifted his team after being awarded a lengthy blockbuster
extension at the age of 38.
This can be one of the primary discouraging factors for the Mets as they set about deciding fate of their 38-year-old knuckleballer.
In comparison, third baseman Wright is ideally poised to compel the organisation to prepare a lucrative deal for him.
As the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see what the Mets decide to offer their star players as they prepare themselves for the 2013 regular season.
