New York Mets might land Endy Chavez – MLB Update
While the New York Mets have failed to extend a considerable offer to free agent player Jose Reyes thus far, the management is looking to re-sign out-fielder Endy Chavez, who became a free agent after this past season. A source disclosed that the management
is confident of securing a deal with Chavez and thus ensuring stability in the roster, especially after failing to handle Reyes’ case in an efficient manner.
The Mets have indicated their intent of slashing the payroll for 2012 and thus re-signing Reyes will make little sense. The Mets will want to retain players with a decent skill set who are not as expensive as Reyes. A 30-million-dollar cut is substantial
and thus will require radical steps by the management, which can also lead to a lapse in performance.
The Mets failed to finish the season on a strong note and it now seems that it might take years for the team to develop a winning combination in the absence of Reyes, who was a home-grown All-Star player for the Mets. Being with the Mets throughout his Major
League Baseball career, Reyes would have never decided on leaving the only ballclub he has ever known, had it not been for the way he has been treated.
Chavez is on the wrong side of 30s and thus will not demand a lucrative long-term contract. His stay with the Mets in 2008 was versatile, but then he left to play for Seattle Mariners in 2009. He was lucky enough to play for the Texas Rangers this season,
experiencing a seven-game World Series saga against the St. Louis Cardinals. However, the Cardinals came back from behind to win 4-3 and thus hand the Rangers their second consecutive loss in the Fall Classic. Texas lost to San Francisco Giants in five games
during 2010 and even though the result this time was better than what it was last year, it was not convincing.
The Mets have articulated that improving the bull-pen is their top-priority for the offseason and thus there will be a few, if any, signings on the offensive front.
