New York Mets not convinced to re-sign Jose Reyes – MLB Update
New York Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson reiterated on Tuesday, November 1 that the ballclub does not plan to make a lucrative and an overwhelming offer to keep their shortstop Jose Reyes onboard for the next season.
Reyes, a free agent for the first time, is still unsure about his future endeavours. Although the player has expressed his desire of staying at the only ballclub he has ever known, the management is content on testing the free market to get a price for the
2011 batting champion.
The Mets, in a desperate attempt to slash their payroll from 140-million-dollars to 115-million-dollars, have already stated their intent of not re-signing Reyes on the terms that he currently enjoys. The management believes that the team needs reinforcement
in the bull-pen and thus offence is one place where excessive dollars should not be wasted.
Alderson, talking to reporters for the first time since Reyes became a free agent on Sunday, October 30, asserted that the team will not make an offer that will attract Jose and that no resolution between both parties is expected for quite a few months.
The general manager articulated that there are a few situations where the concerned player might indicate the amount that it would take for him to relinquish free agency and if that is not the scenario, the club might make a lucrative offer. However, he
remained adamant that Reyes is an unusual case and thus no agreement can be reached this early.
Alderson said, “I don’t think either one of those things is going to happen. I don’t think Jose is going to give us a number for which he would forgo free agency, and I don’t think we’re in a position to make what I would characterize as a preemptive offer."
Reyes is an unusual offensive talent at shortstop, becoming the batting champion this season. His talent accompanied by a long history of injuries makes it difficult for teams to moderate a price tag for Reyes.
It now seems likely that the Mets will not make the highest offer for Reyes and thus it might become difficult for the team to compete against the likes of Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves.
