New York Mets not to make a lucrative offer for Jose Reyes – MLB Update

With the World Series now over, talks are now getting hyped as to whether All-Star slugger Jose Reyes will return to New York Mets and Citi Field. The Mets have a five-day window for negotiations with the player after the Fall Classic, but are sure on not
re-signing Reyes during that time frame.
Club sources have clarified that they will not set the market price for Reyes and that the management wants other teams to determine his value. Officials have already made it clear that the Mets are expecting a payroll cut from the 140-million-dollar mark
to somewhere in the range of 110-million to 115-million-dollars. They further added that if Reyes leaves, Ruben Tejada will replace him as shortstop and the timing of this will not affect other the team’s overall strategy.
Highlighting the fact that this process will not be a quick one, a source said, “The fan base would love for it to be that way, but a quick process would mean that he will not be a Met. Let him go do the dance, and see how (other teams) value him. Why should
we set the market?”
Officials remained adamant of initially making a low offer and then reacting to the situation after other teams make their respective offers for their home-grown All-Star. The officials continued that there is no point in making an obstinate or a final offer
this early in the process.
A major factor that continues to attract the management at Mets towards the player is that he is a dynamic 28-year-old batting champion and has many years of baseball left in him. Furthermore, his offensive abilities are credible and a shortstop with such
aptitude is usually a difficult find. New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter is one example, but Reyes has still a lot to prove before he gets comparison with his counterpart.
Another source added that the club will make every effort possible to sign the slugger, but Reyes would want a decent amount in return as well. However, with a lucrative offer not being put forward, Reyes might have to make a choice; either stay with the
only ballclub he has ever known or accept the highest offer.
