New York Mets on the verge of taking huge advantage of possible trade of R.A. Dickey - MLB Update
As more organisations emerge in the baseball Winter Meetings seeking R.A. Dickey, New York Mets have been placed in an ideal position to earn the maximum advantage of his trade.
The demand of Dickey is so high that the Mets can dictate terms and acquire players that they want in exchange for him.
There are some teams such as the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals that desperately need a starting pitcher. For this, they are willing to spend a huge amount of money in the free agent market.
The fact the market hosts only a handful of pitchers reduces the possibility that they will be able to hire one.
In this scenario, the best option for them is negotiate with the Mets and obtain Dickey as a part of a trade.
The Mets suffer a shortage of outfielders and a catcher at the moment. They lack the requisite money to buy free agents, making it extremely necessary for them to get rid of one of their star players and fill vacant spots on the roster in this manner.
Trade of Dickey can go a long way in removing their worries.
Earlier when the Mets began talks for his trade, some of the teams were reluctant to give away their top outfielders. One of them was the Kansas City Royals.
That caused the Mets to think retention of Dickey through his contract extension as a better option than sending him somewhere else.
However as the team’s need for a quality starter grows intense, the clubs that were earlier hesitant of sacrificing their outfielders will most probably agree to a trade involving Dickey.
The net result will be in the favour of New York as the players desired by them will be attained.
Gradually, the chances of a contract extension for Dickey by the Mets are diminishing.
While earlier he could hope for clinching an agreement, at the moment odds suggest he will play somewhere else next year.
This is more so in light of the comments of one of the managers of the interested teams. He has stated that although the trade has not occurred yet, the tilt of the Mets is toward making it happen.
“Oh, yeah, they’re going to move him,” he said. “We don’t want to give up the player they asked for, but what I took from the conversation was that they believe they’ll find a taker.”
His confidence suggests that some important development has taken place in the plan of New York Mets about Dickey.
The fact this manager must have been a part of the negotiations made up until now with the club strengthens the assumption that the Mets are about to trade Dickey.
Fans will be disheartened in case Dickey departs New York. Only time will tell as to where he goes and plays next year.
