New York Mets out-class Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 as Miguel Batista shines on the mound - MLB Update
Starter Miguel Batista brings all his experience into play and helps the New York Mets win 3-1 against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field, New York, NY in first match of the two game series on May 14, 2012.
Right in the bottom of first inning, the Mets surged to one run lead. Both sides managed handful of hits.
The Mets had just three hits in 27 at-bats, while the Brewers struck six in 32 at-bats.
Centre fielder for the Mets, Andres Torres has stuck somewhere after making a glittering come back from the injury. As he has hit one home run and 10 RBIs in the season, he is hitless on Monday.
Even in a game where hits are few and far between, third-baseman David Wright is not missing any opportunity to make the season as one of his best. While he completed one run, he went 1-for-3 in the game.
His batting average has declined slightly to .398, after reaching more than .400 earlier. He has sparked anticipations about becoming an only player since 1941 to post a .400 batting average at the end of the season.
Second baseman Daniel Murphy, whose brilliance was overshadowed by fireworks emanating from most of the Mets’ hitters earlier, finally put up a stand-out show on the plate.
In four at-bats, he slammed two hits and contributed one RBI. He is going .333/.375/.404 in the season.
After showing rare signs of aggression in last few games, Ike Davis sees a halt in his progress.
He was unable to connect any of the four at-bats he came across, while being struck-out twice by the pitcher.
One of the best things coming off in the game for the Mets was lengthy seven innings, Batista threw.
As he was called up in place of Mike Pelfrey, who is sustaining an injury at the moment, not many hopes were being pinned at him. He was being seen more as vacuum filler than a genuine ace.
Batista however cheered his manager by pitching shut-out seven innings. He struck-out five and gave up four hits.
The Mets will hope that rest of their pitchers take inspiration from Batista and start coming up with something similar in the season.
