New York Mets outclass Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 as Matt Harvey stands out in debut - MLB Update
The starter Matt Harvey is impressive in his Major League debut as he helps the New York Mets win 3-1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 26, 2012 at Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona in the first game of the four match series.
Finally, Harvey had his time in the Majors after becoming a cause of speculation earlier over his entry in the season.
Right from the start of the season, Mets’ management maintained that they will not call Harvey in the Majors unless he gives them a strong reason for doing so.
For the team officials, Harvey had still issues with his throws. Therefore, they did not want his premature appearance in the season.
However, later in the season such events happened which compelled the management to bring Harvey on their rotation. With Dillon Gee and Johan Santana injured, calling Harvey in to the rotation for doing the starting job became indispensable.
Interestingly, Harvey begins his Major League journey with a win. In little more than five innings, he was scoreless. The most exciting aspect of his outing was the 11 strike-outs he drew on Thursday.
Offensively, New York struck 10 hits in the game. The right fielder Scott Hairston slammed the highest number of hits. However, their third-baseman David Wright was hitless.
Meanwhile, Mets’ manager Terry Collins beams with pride in stating that Harvey has met the expectations in his first start. However, he wants Harvey to adjust to the environment quickly.
"He lived up to exactly what everybody has talked about him," said Collins. "Now I want him to go out the next time and be a little more comfortable yet pitch as effectively as he did today. He is a different cat."
The victory was awaited by the Mets as they were recently swept in the three match series by the Washington Nationals.
Collins will like to see the players replicating the performance that they put up on Thursday in the next three games. With the momentum on their side, they have an ideal opportunity to win the series.
It will be interesting to see how far the Mets can carry their winning momentum forward.
