New York Mets outclass Houston Astros 3-1 as R.A. Dickey shines - MLB Update
The starter R.A. Dickey records his 16th win of the season as the New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 3-1 at Citi Field, New York in the second match of the three game series on August 25, 2012.
Dickey comes to the rescue of the team again. After facing numerous losses in the last couple of weeks, the Mets are in desperate need of some victories. This series is an ideal opportunity for them to gain momentum and construct a long winning streak to
carry some confidence for the rest of the season.
On Saturday, Dickey gave up just one run in seven innings and though the number of strike-outs by him was far from what he generally manages, he somehow was able to block the Astros from posting a substantial total on the score-board.
He yielded five hits and struck-out two in the match. Apart from him, the relievers were equally impressive. Relief pitcher Frank Francisco carried out the closing job successfully for the team as he earned his 21st save of the season.
Francisco will now be pleased after he vented his frustration on the water cooler by slamming it down on the ground following his rough up on the mound the other day.
Offensively the bulk of the contribution came from second baseman Justin Turner who hammered a home-run in the game, strengthening the Mets’ lead as a result.
Meanwhile, Dickey believes the kind of pitch count he maintained on Saturday that he must have ended up finishing a complete game.
"I had a pitch count that I should've thrown a complete game," Dickey said. "But the way I felt it would've been selfish of me not to be honest."
Mets’ manager Terry Collins is all-praise of Dickey, terming him invincible. He is extremely impressed by his contribution toward posting first run from the Mets’ side on Saturday.
"We think this guy's invincible. He's starting to get as run down just as much as anybody else," Collins said.
There is still one match remaining in the series and therefore New York cannot afford complacency. Team officials will be expecting a rather dominant and overwhelming victory against the Astros in the next game.
