New York Mets outclass Miami Marlins 5-1 as Jason Bay hits grand slam - MLB Update
Left fielder Jason Bay leads the New York Mets to a 5-1 win against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park, Miami on September 2, 2012 in the third match of the three game series.
The run spree achieved in the first inning kept the Mets afloat throughout the game. It was for the same reason despite experiencing a run drought from the first inning onward they managed to clinch the victory.
Apart from the offence, the pitchers were also impressive. New York’s starter Chris Young gave up just one run in five innings as he protected the lead successfully.
Young has stabilised now after being roughed up in his initial few outings in the season. It was his just fourth win of the season which explains he still has a long way to go to become a consistent performer for the team.
Mets were fortunate to see quality innings thrown by their relievers late as the Marlins made every attempt to bounce back. Although they had enough runs to defend, the way they restricted the batters to connect hits was appreciable.
Meanwhile, Mets’ manager Terry Collins can take a lot of positives from a rare excellent outing on the plate that Bay put up on Sunday. Bay hammered a grand slam as he spearheaded the offence in the first inning.
Bay has been inviting criticism from various quarters over his inability to produce hits and support the team’s offence. Therefore he will be relieved now to some extent. He will try to use the current momentum to improve his batting average considerably.
Collins praised the attitude that Bay showed toward the game while he was going through a lean period. He clarifies that this is the reason why he has begun to turn things around now.
"This guy's a professional," Terry Collins said. "He understands. He's the first guy to stand up and say, `Look, I'm not getting it done. I don't blame you for what's going on. I got nobody to blame but myself."
Meanwhile, Bay commented on the bad patch he endured and how he is feeling now.
"I'm not out there trying to impress anybody or fake anything," Bay said. "It's obviously been a very trying time, and I take a lot of pride trying to be the same guy every day."
As the series has concluded now, the Mets will be looking to take their winning momentum in the upcoming games and keep putting up excellent performances.
