New York Mets outclassed the New York Yankees 9-4 in the first game of their two-match regular series encounter on Wednesday, May 29 at Yankees Stadium in New York City.
Mets took early lead of five runs’ in the very first inning and maintained it towards end. In-fact their entire batting line-up played brilliantly and showed great offensive plays.
“Some great at-bats in the first inning, I just think there's a different attitude in the clubhouse,” manager Terry Collins said.
Short stop Ruben Tejada scored one run on one hit. He came to bat five times and managed to maintain his slugging percentage of .262.
“I have to concentrate on my job, I have to get better every day and go play hard every day,” Tejada said after the game about his performance.
Second baseman Daniel Murphy ran for one RBI along with two runs. He hammered the Yankees’ pitchers with great force and never gave them any chance to dominate.
Catcher John Buck not only did well behind the plate, but he also showed his extraordinary skills on the plate by scoring one run on two hits. He ran for a single RBI on his five at bats, but he also maintained his slugging percentage at .448.
“It's nothing at all. Arm felt great today. Just wasn't making pitches, The ball was just up and in the middle of the plate a lot,” Yankees starter David Phelps.
The Mets pitchers equally contributed in their team’s tremendous win. Jeremy Hefner started the game for the Mets as he tossed six solid innings and allowed only three runs on nine hits. It was a good individual performance by the Mets starter as he also
managed to strike out five Yankees’ top hitters on 4.74 ERA.
“That's a five-star at-bat if you ask me. With guys in scoring position, that was huge, You can just see the quality of his at-bats literally the last week. They're completely different,” John Buck.
Closing pitcher LaTroy Hawkins also played well with 1.1 innings’ spell. He allowed only one run and one earned run on 3.47 ERA.
