New York Mets outclass Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2 as Ike Davis stands out - MLB Update
First baseman Ike Davis stands out with two home-runs as he leads the New York Mets to a 6-2 triumph against Pittsburgh Pirates at Citi Field, New York on September 24, 2012 in the first game of the four match series.
Pirates struggled to ascertain that the hits they managed on Monday are converted into runs on the scoreboard. Despite the fact they struck a higher number of hits than the Mets they were unable to outscore them.
The fact Mets saw home-runs coming off from Davis facilitated them in registering more runs. On the other hand, Pirates could hardly slam any huge hits.
Mets are in dire need of victories because their win-loss record has sunk to the lowest level. If they keep losing matches from now onward, they will start the next season demoralised and low on confidence. In this context, signing off the season on a positive
note is extremely important.
Jenrry Mejia, who is otherwise a relief pitcher, started for the Mets in the game. He leaked just four hits in five innings and was scoreless as he struck-out four.
Apart from him, their relievers also showed command and control and were successful to a great extent in stopping Pirates late in the innings from scoring runs.
The fact the Mets have a mediocre offence was visible in the game as only two players stepped up for them. Thanks to the two home-runs hammered by Davis and the single by third baseman David Wright, they managed to stay ahead of the Pirates.
The command with which Davis is striking huge hits in almost every game was not seen in the beginning of the season from him.
He laboured hard and was hopelessly poor with regard to connecting and at some point in the season the experts believed he will be sent back to the Minor League. However, right now he seems to be the only one when it comes to striking home-runs for the team.
"The difference is, I'm just not awful," Davis said. "The first 2 1/2 months I was terrible. I felt like I never had played baseball before."
Mets will be trying to win all the remaining matches in the season. It will be interesting to see whether they can keep the momentum going from now onward.
