New York Mets outclass San Diego Padres 6-2 as Jeremy Hefner throws six innings - MLB Update
Jeremy Hefner starts for the New York Mets as he helps them win 6-2 against the San Diego Padres on August 4, 2012 at Petco Park, San Diego, California in the second game of the three match series.
Mets made the most of the vulnerable Padres’ starter Edinson Volquez. The walks that he offered and way-ward throws that he pitched were rightly used for posting a reasonable number of runs.
New York rose to the lead right in the second inning by scoring four runs.
Afterwards, they watched their starter keeping the pressure on batters and the relievers protecting the lead to record a victory.
Hefner threw an incredible spell of six innings for New York. While he yielded five hits, he was successful in restricting batters to scoring just one run.
Following his footsteps, New York’s relievers disallowed Padres to experience any late-inning run-rampage.
Apart from one run given up by Bobby Parnell, the rest of their relievers finished scoreless innings.
Offensively, their left fielder Jordany Valdespin drove in for two runs. He struck one hit in five at-bats. Similarly, their first baseman Ike Davis connected two hits in five at-bats while contributing one RBI.
Meanwhile, Mets’ manager Terry Collins, despite winning the game, is cynical of the way hitters failed to send maximum number of base-runners aboard.
Collins is of the view that inability to do so is one of the greatest reasons why they have declined sharply since the beginning of the second half of the season.
''We are sitting there in the dugout in the ninth inning and thinking we ought to have 10 runs and we don't,'' Collins said. ''We left way too many guys on base again. It was a game we were fortunate to win, but we need to start driving some of those runs
in.''
Hefner is extremely pleased with the way he controlled the game from the start. He is hopeful that he will be given more chances by the manager Collins now after he showed command on Saturday.
New York will be looking to beat the Padres in the last game in order to clinch the series victory.
