New York Mets outscored by Arizona Diamondbacks 3-6 as Chris Young leaks runs - MLB Update
The starter Chris Young crumbles on the mound as he costs the New York Mets a 3-6 defeat against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona in the third game of the four match series on July 28, 2012.
The game was his fifth loss of the season. Young has been vulnerable to allowing hits since he has thrown his first game of the season.
By playing a major role in the defeat of New York on Saturday, he has deepened the team's pitching woes.
With their starting pitchers Johan Santana and Dillon Gee out due to injuries, the Mets cannot afford Young causing defeats by performing poorly anymore.
If the team is to stay in contention for clinching the play-off spot this year, someone who can throw series of scoreless innings as a starter will be needed by the Mets.
On Saturday, Young threw just four innings. He issued seven hits and gave up six runs.
Offensively, apart from the first baseman Ike Davis, none of the Mets’ batters scored runs. All the three runs that New York posted came off three home-runs that Davis struck.
Davis was the stand out performer in the game. His outing was in stark contrast to a slump he experienced in the beginning of the season. He was perfect in utilising his at-bats as he went 4-for-4.
Meanwhile, Mets' manager Terry Collins criticises the offence for being unable to watch the throws right and make appropriate connections. Getting struck-out frequently by the batters was not the kind of performance the Mets are known for.
"We haven't been able to come up with some offense," Terry Collins said. "Today, 15 strikeouts. That is not how we swing the bat."
Meanwhile, Davis does not want just to contribute through home-runs. He aims to improve in terms of making base hits as well. He will be looking to build on the confidence gained from this multi-hit game by him and come out even better the next time.
"It is a positive thing, but obviously I don't want to hit .216 for my career," Davis said. "I want to get base hits, too, and not just home runs. If I am hitting just home runs, at least I am helping the team in that way."
As the starting pitcher proved the Mets’ undoing on Saturday, they will be looking for a better show next time from their pitchers.
