New York Mets overpower the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1: MLB Update
The New York Mets’ starter, Chris Young, had a remarkable day with the ball, as the pitcher tossed seven-shutout innings in the Club’s 2-1 sweep-avoiding-victory against the strong Philadelphia Phillies, at the Citizen Bank Park on Sunday night May 1.
Young pitched seven innings, allowed two scoreless hits, walkhed three and made seven strikeouts for his first win of the season. Young made his record 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA in his last eight starts that extended to the last season.
The Phillies’ starter, Cliff Lee, was wobbly right from the start, gave at least one hit in each of his inning. He lifted off after giving a run on his eight hit. Lee pitched seven innings, allowed a run on eight hits, walked two and made five strikeouts,
however, he lost his second game.
The Phillies were facing one run deficit until the Mets’ reliever, Jason Isringhausen, gave an RBI single to Ryan Howard. In the eighth inning, the game was tied at 1-1 and the pitchers from both the sides were not ready to let the game go away from their
hands.
The Mets’ relievers, Tim Byrdak, Francisco Rodriguez and Pedro Beato tossed impressive pitches and did not give any run. Beato pitched three crucial innings, allowed two hits and took out two batters for his first hold of the season. The closer, Taylor Buchholz,
pitched two-prefect inning and struck out two batters for his first save of the season.
The Phillies' relievers, Michael Status, Antonio Bastardo, Ryan Madson and Danys Baez also had a promising pitching and did not yielded any run in their short spells. The Phillies utilised their closer, Kyle Kendrick, for last three innings, he did well,
but could stop himself from allowing a defeat-earning run in the fourteenth inning.
The Mets’ slugger, David Wright, kicked off the fourteenth inning, driving in a single to left field and stole second on Jayson Bay’s one-out single to centre. David, moved to third when Ike Davis flew out to the warning track in centre and scored a leading
run when Ronny Paulino hit to deep left, allowing Wright to score and put New York up 2-1.
It was the first series' finale loss for the Phillies in this season.
