New York Mets plan to sign Mike Pelfrey from free agency - MLB Update
Instead of offering Mike Pelfrey a contract in the offseason, New York Mets plan to acquire him from free agency.
This move is part of the strategy of reducing the cost because if they directly clinch a deal with him, they will be paying him more. On the other hand, in the free agency scenario they are hopeful that the amount they end up committing in the agreement
will be less.
However in the case of free agency, the other organisations will have an opportunity to lure him onto their side by granting him an expensive contract.
Considering that Pelfrey went through Tommy John surgery, most of the clubs will be doubtful about his effectiveness on the mound. He is rehabilitating and will take some time before getting back to his top notch form as a pitcher.
Unfortunately Pelfrey could not help the Mets much in the season. His expedition in the season did not last long as the emergence of an injury forced him out of it. His absence shortened the options for the Mets on rotation.
Along with Pelfrey, a couple of other pitchers also met with injuries. As a result, the Mets had to deal with a rotation which was without the regular starters. With Pelfrey and then Dillon Gee out from the season, the Mets had to call up hurlers from the
Minor League.
The Mets will be aware of the fact that how a flurry of injuries occurring to the players can dent the progress of the whole team. Their officials will be planning on keeping the experience of 2012 regular season in mind.
As far as the contract extension of Pelfrey is concerned, the Mets cannot afford allocating a huge sum for him alone. They have other issues on the roster to address, mainly their offence needs attention.
This along with the fact that the Mets are not financially strong gives a reason to believe that they will like to acquire Pelfrey at a minimum possible price.
In the offseason, it can be expected that the Mets unveil their plans with regard to making changes on the roster. It will be interesting to see as to how they handle the issue of Pelfrey and where he ends up playing next year.
