New York Mets prevail 6-5 over Colorado Rockies as they record their thirteenth victory – MLB
Relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez comes through successful in the 11th inning as the New York Mets win 6-5 in a cliff-hanger against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado on April 29, 2012.
In a tantalising finish, the game was tied twice on the day.
If the Mets had maintained lead for most part of the game, Rockies were equally resilient, bouncing back from nearly a hopeless situation until the seventh inning.
Interestingly enough, despite throwing scoreless six innings, Johan Santana the starter for the Mets was not accorded the win.
It was because of twist and turns the game took in later half of the innings and how incredibly the reliever Frank Francisco escaped the loss when it was very much on the cards.
Francisco threw the 10th and went for a homer. However he stood his ground and never allowed the Rockies to fetch a victory from him. Thus he rightly grabbed the win in the end.
The Mets will be extremely disappointed with Jon Rauch, who nearly deprived the team of victory by allowing three runs in less than one inning.
The most breathtaking moment appeared in the top of 11th inning.
The first baseman Ike Davis hits to left-centre and David Wright reaches home plate, restoring the lead again.
"It was tough to see. The shadows were pretty bad at that point and the first fastball, he just blew it by me," Davis said. "I was like, 'Oh boy, got to shorten up a little bit.' I put it on the ground and I knew it had a good chance if it didn't hit anybody.
It happened to find a hole."
While the Mets’ fans were apprehensive of a possibility of their reliever blowing the lead again in the bottom of the 11th inning, Ramirez did a great job while recording the save.
Mets' centre-fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis keeps his tremendous form in the season afloat. While going 3-for-6, he maintains an enviable .474 slugging percentage in the season.
Turning things around during crucial junctures of the play has become a norm for the Mets rather than the exception, something that can take them ahead of other teams in many ways.
