New York Mets prove resilient in their 5-4 win against San Francisco Giants - MLB Update
Starter Mike Pelfrey throws eight innings as he helps New York Mets beat San Francisco Giants 5-4 at Citi Field in New York, NY on April 21, 2012.
Innings went along like an easy passage for the Mets to victory. At the end of the eighth they had a three run lead and thus only the wait for winning moment was underway. However what turned out in the ninth inning threatened the Mets to an extent that
the importance of having reliable bullpen strength was re-enforced.
Mets replaced the starter Pelfrey with Frank Francisco in the ninth. Much to their surprise, he gave up three runs and as a result got the score level before the bottom of the ninth.
If it was not for an immediate response by the Mets who got him off right away from the mound, game may well have gone out of their reach.
Thanks to Ruben Tejada who was fortunate enough to witness a bad throw from the catcher and reach home plate in a mark of winning run.
Knowing the extent of the potential damage, manager Terry Collins stated that he will address Francisco soon to know what got him to go so ordinary on the mound. After all, the whole effort built up from the start was about to go in vain so cheaply with
his poor pitches.
"I'm going to talk to Frankie tomorrow," Collins said. "He's not happy with what happened, but remember, he's as new at this as anyone else."
Kirk Nieuwenhuis is going through his first regular season. Un-expectedly, he has cheered the whole club with two homers and four RBIs contributed by him so far in the season. However in today’s game, he went 0-for-five.
The grounder he managed in the ninth proved extremely valuable as it led to the Giants’ catcher committing an error allowing Tejada to complete the winning run, he can take a lot of heart from there.
"I was coming from a long way out, and it's my ball all the way and I just overran it," Nieuwenhuis said. "I thought it was going to be closer to the infield and it ended up carrying a lot more than I thought."
Mets now stand 8-6 on the table and with couple of more wins they can take over the Braves. They will be looking to keep the momentum going in their upcoming games.
