New York Mets pull off 9-4 victory against Cincinnati Reds as David Wright shines - MLB Update
Relief pitcher Bobby Parnell throws a scoreless inning during crucial juncture of the game and allows the New York Mets to win 9-4 against the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field, New York, NY on May 17, 2012 in second game of the two match series.
R.A. Dickey started for the Mets and pitched six innings. While he struck-out eight, he conceded four runs. The lead he had allowed the Reds to enjoy during initial innings will have easily sent the Mets on losing side. Thanks to offence, the Mets managed
to overcome.
It was typical Dickey outing on the mound. He was sharp in drawing strike-outs, but was unable to reign on runs.
Reds were dominant until first half of the game. Before the start of bottom of the fifth, the Reds had a four run lead. The way the Mets had performed until then, the Reds were relishing an illusion of winning straight away.
What they did not know perhaps was Mets' ability to turn the table anytime in the game.
Similar to what the Mets did against the Philadelphia Phillies in third game of three-match series, as their hitters stood up late in the innings and pulled off a stunning victory
Third-baseman David Wright is turning out a true saviour for his side. By providing hits during critical moments of the game and triggering activities on bases, Wright is maintaining a .411 batting average.
Going 2-for-2 and drawing three walks, Wright has taken his slugging percentage to highest in the line-up at .621.
At the start of bottom of the eighth inning, score was tied and the game was wide-open. Wright came and doubled to deep centre, helping Rob Johnson reach home plate and taking the Mets past the Reds as a result.
Finally centre fielder Andres Torres had a hit after going hitless in number of games. In five at-bats, he managed one hit and completed one.
Second baseman Daniel Murphy boosts his season batting average to .331 by striking two hits in four at-bats.
Frank Francisco came as a closer and threw an impeccable one inning, keeping the Mets’ lead intact.
The Mets are going 21-17 and standing at third position on National League East Division.
With a return of left fielder Jason Bay in the line-up soon, their offence will strengthen further.
Their relievers did great job and if they can show consistency from now onward, they can make the Mets a formidable side in the season.
