New York Mets put Josh Thole on Disabled list as he suffers concussion - MLB Update
During the game against the Philadelphia Phillies, catcher Josh Thole had his head troubled while experiencing a collision. Moments later, it came out that the concussion he suffered was severe and therefore needed proper treatment.
As he is on seven day Disable List now, the manager Terry Collins hopes that he will recover in time and resume play.
Thole is hitting .284 in the season and is expected to lend a robust contribution to the offence this year.
List of injuries for the Mets is expanding after every game. Earlier short-stop, Ruben Tejada had problems at his right quadriceps and ended up on 15-day DL.
Similarly, Mike Pelfrey, their starter is sustaining an injury and has shortened options for the manager in the rotation.
Sandy Alderson, the General Manager of the Mets talks of concussion, Thole is going through at the moment.
Believing that Thole is having this problem for many years, decision about DL was immediately taken after an inspection by the doctor, he stated.
“He’s had other concussions and just based on the doctors’ evaluation he’s basically been consigned to no activity for a period of time,” Alderson said. “As a result I don’t think he’ll be back in seven days.”
Alderson explains that his injury does not just relate to his concussion, as the doctor reported. He is likely to have more problems ahead. Expecting him return within seven days fully fit will be a bit unreasonable assumption, he maintains.
Mike Nickeas will be in line to replace him behind the plate for as long as he stays out. Commenting on the incident that led to concussion by Thole, he calls such happenings as part and parcel of the play.
“It was [scary] because that’s your buddy and teammate and him getting hit like that is never a good thing,” Nickeas said. “It is part of the game. I think [Wigginton] was trying to dislodge the ball and go in there hard. Wigginton was just playing hard
and unfortunately he just caught Josh in a vulnerable spot.”
Thole had his nose bruised up in the process of an accident with Ty Wigginton. He was totally unconscious for first few moments before realising what had happened to him.
As significant as job of the catcher is, the Mets cannot afford to see him out from the season for a long period of time.
