New York Mets record 3-2 win against Miami Marlins in ninth inning - MLB Update
Reliever Ramon Ramirez throws a strong penultimate inning as the New York Mets win 3-2 against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field in New York, NY on April 26, 2012.
A meagre one run lead the Marlins maintained until the end of the ninth was always vulnerable to the kind of hitters the Mets had.
So it happened, just when Heath Bell will think of recording a save for his side, the Mets turned the table sensationally in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Bases loaded walk by Justin Turner led David Wright to complete run and tie the score as a result for the Mets.
Walks Marlins’ closer Bell gave in the last inning were reflective of the pressure he was under on the mound.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis is having a dream regular season start and a winning single he struck to deep right in the game was another indication of the kind of surprise performer he is turning out to be.
Bell was assertive of his control in a post-match statement, saying only the walks were his downside on the mound and the rest of his throws were just spot on.
"I felt really good. I felt that my pitches were there. I felt like I threw the pitches where I wanted for the most part. I think 95 percent of the time, I was right where I needed to be," Bell said. "Yeah, I did walk some guys."
Mets’ starter Niese did enough to keep his regular season ERA to an impressive 2.81. In seven innings, he gave up two earned runs and struck-out six.
Marlins’ offensive woes are aggravating instead of going the other way. Star shortstop, Jose Reyes was hitless in the game, something that may trigger a panic button in the management for causing his shuffle up in the line-up.
Centre-fielder Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-5 for the Mets and took his season slugging percentage to an incredible .517.
Season is panning out just the way the Mets will have liked. Their offence is stepping up just when required and pitchers are doing their best to bring strike-outs.
However, with an injury to their starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey, their rotation has taken a set-back. This potentially points to a grave weakness in their rotation.
The manager Terry Collins will look to find an appropriate replacement to plug the discrepancy right from the beginning.
