New York Mets record their fifth win as they defeat Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 - MLB Update
Starter R.A. Dickey employed the knuckler to help New York Mets win 5-2 against Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 13, 2012.
Dream regular season start stays for the Mets as they record their fifth victory of the season.
From the outset they were dominant and took Phillies’ starter Cliff Lee for four runs which included two homers.
Phillies boast one of the best rotations and the way the Mets hit Lee for distances was hugely impressive. Although Lee struck-out seven, he was hit five times in the game.
Mets did not send David Wright on the field despite the clearance from a hand specialist who checked him earlier. Manager Terry Collins has not yet shelved the option of putting him on the disabled list.
Phillies were unable to build on the surprising resurgence their offence showed in the last game.
In terms of number of hits however they were ahead of the Mets as they managed 11 in 36 at-bats five more than Mets made in the game.
Only thing Phillies will be happy about after the game is Freddy Galvis who struck his first homer for Philadelphia in the Major League.
Second baseman Galvis is a replacement for Chase Utley, an injured hitter who many believe if was in the line-up for the Phillies, they will not be experiencing as bad a fate as they are at the moment.
Dickey stood like a wall in front of the Phillies who were upbeat to carry the momentum from the last game and the fact his knuckler was unplayable, he made them helpless at-times.
With base-runners on, it becomes harder for the pitchers to avoid runs but credit to Dickey who used his knuckle-ball nearly perfect.
"I had a lot of baserunners, that's for sure," Dickey said. "But ultimately the game comes down to four or five pitches. Fortunately I was able to make the pitch. Cliff Lee is one of the best. He outpitched me in a lot of ways. But we were able to make the
big pitch and minimize the damage."
Surprisingly enough, Mets are seeing homers from their hitters. Left fielder Jason Bay struck a two run homer and centre fielder Scott Hairston also thrashed a home-run.
For the moment Mets will look to focus on the play instead of getting dug into the happiness of wins. Only this way they can keep the momentum on their side.
